History

 

Pritchards Island is an undeveloped barrier island off the coast of Southern Beaufort County. The island was donated to the University of South Carolina Development Foundation in 1983.

 

Currently the island is managed by the University of South Carolina Beaufort. The island is used for education, conservation, and research purposes by the University, other state institutions, and the general public.

Mission

  • Education  ::  To teach USCB students and the general public about coastal ecology through outreach and field based programming on Pritchards Island.

  • Research  ::  To study the interrelationships of coastal ecosystems and provide valuable data and information for preserving our coastal resources.
  • Conservation :: To increase community awareness about coastal conservation issues and promote the preservation of coastal habitats, flora, and fauna.
