USCB Fall 2017 Academic Updates
June 23, 2017
BLUFFTON, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Beaufort will begin its 2017-18 academic year in August, 2017. Many academic activities have been scheduled and announcements are being made for the upcoming year.
Convocation and FYRE Kickoff – August 23rd at 1 p.m. – Sand Shark Recreation Center – The convocation academic ceremony is the official kick-off of the academic year. Convocation will feature a keynote address from Joan Robinson-Berry, Vice President and General Manager of Boeing South Carolina.
FYRE – The First Year Reading Experience is an opportunity for students to have their first common learning experience before they arrive on campus for classes. First-year and new transfer students receive a copy of the book at summer orientation. Throughout the school year, students have the chance to participate in special events planned around the book. This year's book is Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly. A special screening of the film along with FYREside chats and an essay contest will take place this fall.
Classes Begin – August 24 – Classes begin on all campuses for the 2017-18 academic year.
Academic Tuition – Mandated and unavoidable expenses continue to escalate annually. This year, USCB will experience the largest single year state mandated increase to required university contributions for employee retirement accounts. Health and property insurance costs are also significantly increasing and the university also anticipates an increase in utility cost. Virtually none of these costs were funded as a result of the recent legislative session. Every effort has been made to minimize the impact to students, but unfortunately USCB has to raise student tuition by three percent. This increase applies to all universities in the University of South Carolina system.
