A Chancellor With an Eye to the Future
Jane T. Upshaw, Chancellor of the University of South Carolina Beaufort, understands what it means to discover a powerful future.
As she has led USCB from a two-year campus to a four-year university, opened the new Hilton Head Gateway campus in Bluffton, and founded Sand Shark athletics, launching nine intercollegiate athletic programs, Dr. Upshaw has created a powerful future for USCB. She challenges students to get involved—and shape the future of USCB through their leadership.
“Our students are builders—they understand they are leaving a legacy here at USCB,” says Upshaw. “From working for Fortune 500 companies to five star resorts, national media companies to the White House, our graduates make an impact on the world when they graduate.”
Since discovering USCB more than 30 years ago as an adjunct professor, Upshaw earned her Ph.D. and faculty tenure, then was selected as Campus Dean in 1999. After leading the campaign to earn USCB baccalaureate status, she become the first woman selected to head a University of South Carolina comprehensive university. Upshaw continues to lead the institution through unprecedented growth in academic degree programs and students.
Since 2002, USCB’s enrollment has increased by 146 percent, yet the University hasn’t sacrificed the intimate, personalized atmosphere that is so important to Upshaw and the campus community. And with all of the great things happening at USCB, it’s no surprise that it’s been the fastest growing institution in the state of South Carolina over the past decade.
“It’s a time and place to shine at USCB,” says Upshaw. “Our students see firsthand they gain the experience, knowledge, and confidence to succeed. We’re delivering powerful futures each and every day.”
