Campus Evacuation 9-28-2009

  • The University of South Carolina Beaufort initially received a bomb threat by phone early Monday afternoon, September 28, 2009.

  • The caller did not specify which of the University’s two campuses was being threatened.

  • USCB Campus Police utilized the University’s emergency phone/text messaging system to alert students, faculty and staff that they should evacuate both the Beaufort and Bluffton campuses immediately and that all classes were cancelled for the remainder of the day. An all-university email was sent to faculty, staff and students and a message regarding the evacuation was posted on USCB.edu

  • All University buildings were secured by campus police once everyone had been evacuated.

  • Campus Police and law enforcement conducted a thorough sweep with bomb-sniffing dogs on each building on both campuses.

  • The Beaufort campus of USCB was given the all-clear first and secured by Campus Police for the night. The Hilton Head Gateway campus in Bluffton has also been given the all-clear and residential students are free to return to campus.

  • Classes will resume as normal on Tuesday, September 29.
