Volunteers in Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is an IRS-sponsored program that makes free income-tax preparation services available to individuals and families nationwide.  It is specifically designed to help clients take advantage of all available tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC) among others.

In fact, VITA helped return $4.2 million dollars to Beaufort County residents’ pockets in 2014!  Generally speaking, VITA clients qualify for anywhere between $450 and $6,000 in refunds.

There are twelve VITA sites in our community, including one at USCB. Current students as well as community volunteers serve as the IRS-certified tax preparers at this site.  Clients are consistently impressed with the level of professionalism and dedication that our volunteers demonstrate.

Please visit www.vitalowcountry.org in order to find the most up-to-date information about the VITA Program.  Pay particular attention to the:

  • Eligibility requirements
  • Dates, times, and locations where services are provided
  • Documents that clients must bring in order to have their taxes filed
