Discover USCB's Traditions
A week-long campus celebration when you arrive on campus as a freshman. A mascot—the
Sand Shark—which is unlike any other college or university in the nation. At the University
of South Carolina Beaufort, we’re building a community and generating excitement with
numerous time-honored traditions, all starting with Beaufort College in 1795.
Athletics, campus life, and history all play a vital role in helping the institution discover its own powerful future. At USCB, we’re still a young four-year university, and we invite you to discover your own on-campus traditions, as well as celebrate the ones that have already been started.
Welcome Week
As a way for freshmen to get acclimated to USCB—both academically and socially—the Office of Student Life and the Sand Shark Activities Board host Welcome Week. During the seven days before classes start, new students are able to meet each other, get familiar with both campuses, meet faculty and staff, and take part in more than 30 events, including:
- Academic workshops
- Beach Olympics
- Community service opportunities
- Live music and entertainment
- Recreation trips
- Sharkapalooza (where you can discover USCB’s clubs and organizations)
- Sports competitions
- Themed meals
Our Colors
USCB’s school colors are navy, sand, and garnet—each color representing a unique part of USCB. Navy is a strong color that supports the image of a marine life mascot and represents the blue skies and waters of the Carolinas. Sand offers an important visual connection to the sand colored architecture on both campuses, as well as local beaches. Garnet represents our role in the University of South Carolina System.
Our Sand Shark Mascot
The sand shark is familiar to the Lowcountry and is often caught from local tidal docks. Sharks are powerful, graceful, strong, and sleek—but not always predictable. They also make for a strong athletic mascot—proud, tough, aggressive, and athletic. This mascot conveys our coastal location to national audiences.
Students vs. Faculty Kickball
Each fall during Homecoming Week, our faculty take on the students in a hard-fought, competitive kickball match where the winners get bragging rights for the entire year.
Homecoming Week
Each fall, USCB hosts Homecoming Week. From a block party to a barbeque, student-faculty kickball to a chili cook-off, Homecoming Week features numerous events for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community.
University of South Carolina Alma Mater
“We Hail Thee Carolina”
We hail thee, Carolina, and sing thy high praise;
With loyal devotion, remembering the days,
When proudly we sought thee, thy children to be;
Here's a health, Carolina, forever to thee!
Since pilgrims of learning, we entered thy walls
And found dearest comrades in thy classic halls;
We've honored and loved thee as sons faithfully;
Here's a health, Carolina, forever to thee!
Generations of sons have rejoiced to proclaim
Thy watchword of service, thy beauty and fame
For ages to come shall their rallying cry be;
Here's a health, Carolina, forever to thee!
Fair shrine of high honor and truth, thou shalt still
Blaze forth as a beacon, thy mission fulfill;
And crowned by all hearts in a new jubilee;
Here's a health, Carolina, forever to thee!
