How to Apply for Financial Aid
Students who plan to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2020 – 2021 school year can start applying on or after, October 1, 2019. You will be required to report income and tax information from 2018. We highly recommend that you use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to import your tax data. The priority due date for the USCB Financial Aid / Veterans Affairs Office to receive the application information from the federal processor is March 1, 2020.
The University of South Carolina Beaufort Financial Aid/VA Office strongly encourages students to complete and submit your FAFSA on the web. Remember that it can take up to 2-3 weeks for USC Beaufort to receive your FAFSA results, so we encourage you to apply as early as possible.
FAFSA on the Web:
Is a free US Department of Education website where you can complete a FAFSA online and submit it via the Internet and use a federal FSA to sign the application electronically. If you are a dependent student, your parent must also sign the application. You can obtain an FSA ID by clicking on “Start a New FAFSA,” next click “Enter your (your student’s) FSA ID” and “Create a FSA ID.” Please note that the student and parent will each need a valid e-mail address, in order to verify the username and password.
Use the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet as a tool to assist you in completing FAFSA on the Web, the worksheet is available in English and Spanish. The worksheet is available at https://fafsa.gov/ for you to print. Complete the worksheet prior to entering your information online. Do not mail the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet to the Office of Financial Aid or to the federal processor.
Before transmitting your application, review your answers and make any necessary corrections. Be sure to provide the appropriate signature(s) on your FAFSA. If you do not wish to sign the application electronically with your FSA ID, or you can print a paper signature page from FAFSA on the Web, sign it and mail it to the address provided.

The FAFSA is necessary to apply for the following financial aid programs:
- Federal Pell Grant
- Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant
- South Carolina Need-Based Grant
- Federal Work-Study
- Federal Direct Subsidized Loan
- Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan
- Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan (Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students)
- Limited private loans, grants or scholarships
Make sure you include our federal school code on the FAFSA. USCB's school code is 003450.
Financial Aid awards are processed on a first-come, first served basis. Because funds are limited, with the exception of Pell Grant and Direct Loans, we urge you to apply early. Applicants who apply by March 1st for the upcoming school year shall receive first consideration for campus-based federal student aid funds (i.e., Federal Work-Study, Federal SEOG and SC Need-Based Grant programs).
Once your FAFSA is processed by the US Department of Education, your information is sent electronically to USCB by the use of our school code, 003450. The date your application is electronically received by our office is considered as your application received date for financial aid processing. Applications meeting all federal and institutional requirements by the priority deadline are considered for the maximum financial aid package for which a student is eligible, including need-based aid programs with limited funding. Applications received after the priority date will be considered for available funds remaining.
Students are selected at random for verification by the Federal Student Aid Programs’ Central Processing System and/or the Institution. Institutions must verify the information provided by the student/spouse and/or parent(s) on the FAFSA before an award can be offered to the student. In order to ensure the accuracy of the information provided on your FAFSA, you may be required to submit the Tax Return Transcript and Wage and Earnings Statement (W-2 Form) to the USCB Office of Financial Aid//Veterans Affairs. Students and parents also have the option to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, instead of submitting the tax return transcript. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool pulls the information from your tax return onto the FAFSA, which enables you to produce accurate information.
USCB students who are selected for verification will receive a written request from the Office of Financial Aid/VA for the required verification documents. It is very important to respond promptly to all requests for verification information from the Office of Financial Aid/VA. Delays in response or submission of incomplete verification documentation will delay the processing of the student’s file and financial aid award(s).
Please contact the USCB Office of Financial Aid/VA if you have questions or if you are unsure if you have been selected for verification. Counselors are available to assist students with any questions or concerns regarding their eligibility. In an effort to adhere to federal privacy laws, the USCB Office of Financial Aid/VA restricts the release of certain private student information. Students must contact us personally to check the status of their financial aid application and awards. Often, we will be unable to release information to third parties (i.e. parents, spouses, etc.). Students may also check their Self Service Carolina account at: https://my.sc.edu/ for the status of their financial aid award package.
If you are awarded financial aid, an award notification will be sent to your USCB email account. You will be instructed to access SSC to view your financial aid award information. You must follow all instructions provided to ensure that your financial aid awards will be available for you to use during bill processing. You will also be directed to the Financial Aid web site to read the Terms and Conditions of your award(s). It is the student's responsibility to read this information and to become familiar with the terms and conditions.
Your financial aid initially will be processed based on full-time enrollment for both Fall and Spring. If you do not plan to enroll full-time, you will be able to print the award notice, make adjustments to the number of hours of enrollment and submit the corrections to our office. Your awards will be adjusted. Also, you may indicate in the space provided on the printed award notice if you want to revise or decline part or the entire offer. The Office of Financial Aid/VA will attempt to meet your calculated need. However, due to funding limitations, you may not receive funds equal to the total amount of your eligibility.
All financial aid awards are subject to change if the information upon which they were based changes or federal regulations require a change. If the total of your award(s) becomes greater than your documented financial need or the established cost of attendance, your award(s) may need to be adjusted. You will be notified if such an adjustment is necessary. While generally not an issue, all awards are subject to the availability of funding.
