The University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) has joined 16 institutions to participate in the newly launched Rural Student Success Network, a national initiative focused on improving student outcomes at rural-serving colleges and universities.

“Rural-serving institutions like USCB are economic engines that play a vital role in expanding access to higher education that drives workforce development and economic mobility in their communities,” said USCB Provost Dr. Kim Dudas. “We are proud to join this national effort to enhance student success and better serve the needs of our region.”

Supported by a two-year grant through the ECMC Foundation, the Rural Student Success Network brings together bachelor’s degree–granting institutions committed to improving success for community/technical college transfer students and adult learners, while aligning academic programs with regional workforce demands. The initiative is led by Ithaka S+R and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

As a member of the Rural Student Success Network, USCB will take part in peer learning opportunities, data-informed self-assessments, and targeted assistance designed to strengthen practices. Each participating institution will receive a $15,000 subgrant to support engagement, data sharing, and continuous improvement. In addition, institutions will benefit from tailored insights based on institutional, state, and federal data to guide decision-making and program refinement.

Over an 18-month period, the Rural Success Network will focus on three key priorities:

  • Increasing bachelor’s degree completion among community/technical college transfer students
  • Expanding access and support for adult learners
  • Aligning academic offerings with local and regional labor market needs

As part of the initiative, USCB will also receive detailed analysis on how its academic programs align with regional workforce demands. These insights will help inform program development and student support strategies, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of students and employers.
