Scholarships and Fundraising Make Study Abroad Possible for USCB Sand Sharks
The University of South Carolina Beaufort offers study abroad scholarships to students to promote global engagement, enhance cultural understanding, and provide equitable access to international experiences. This summer, 10 undergraduate students will receive scholarships to help pay the costs of their study away trips. Awarded by the university's Student Research and Scholarship Committee, the scholarships range from $300-$800.
“We are so incredibly proud to support these stellar students in their study abroad in four exciting locations this summer, allowing them to both immerse themselves in a new culture and advance their academic knowledge at the same time,” said Carmen Farrell, Ph.D., Faculty Chair of the Student Research and Scholarship Committee.
USCB Study Abroad and Study Away awards went to students in the following course trips:
- Gerace Research Station, San Salvador, Bahamas. Study Abroad Awardees (Faculty mentors Dr. Kim Ritchie and Dr. Caroline Sawyer): Jorden Favor and Taylor Desilva
- Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poland. Study Abroad Awardees (Faculty mentor Dr. Babet Villena-Alvarez): Lexie Castro and Danisha Moise
- France. Study Abroad Awardees (Faculty mentor Dr. Babet Villena-Alvarez): Grayson Hershey, Justin Michonski, Daniela Lopez, Rachael Graham and Dalin Sebree
- Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota. Study Away Awardee (Faculty mentor Dr. Lynne Hutchinson): Keshona Sharpe
Philanthropy and Fundraising
Student organizations, USCB faculty and staff, community members and the USCB Education Foundation have rallied to donate money to help Sand Sharks cover the costs of their academic trips.
The USCB Education Foundation Hospitality Fund generously supported the bulk of the costs for the following course:
Advanced Club Management in Florida. Led by Dr. Sean Barth, students majoring in Hospitality Management will tour private clubs, hotels, restaurants and attraction in St. Augustine, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Deerfield Beach, Davie and Palm Beach from May 12-19. The USCB Education Foundation Hospitality Fund is funding course-related travel, lodging, and most meals for the students on this trip
Fund raising drives sponsored by the Psychology Club and the Nursing department are ongoing for the USCB France and Pine Ridge, South Dakota trips. Support them at: Sand Sharks Go to Paris and Service Learning at Pine Ridge Reservation.
