Olivia Virnoche (left) is a senior Hospitality Management major from LaFayette, NY. She worked on Cape Cod for 12 weeks in the summer of 2025.

Where did you intern?

I interned at Wequassett Resort and Golf Club, one of the only five-star resorts on Cape Cod, located in Harwich, Mass. I worked in two paid positions: HR coordinator and social media intern with the sales and marketing team.

What did you do?

In HR, I helped new hires prepare for their roles, assisted with onboarding, provided tours, and supported the department with various projects. I also shadowed other areas like housekeeping, events, and the front desk. About two weeks into my time there, I joined the sales and marketing team, where I worked with the director to post social media content, meet with photographers/videographers, and provide creative input for showcasing the resort.

What is one surprising thing you learned?

I was most impressed by how well the resort prioritized communication. Concerns were addressed quickly and respectfully, which created a very positive work environment. That lesson in clear and effective communication is something I’ll take with me throughout my career.

Why did you intern there?

I wanted to gain experience in a luxury resort, and Wequassett was an amazing opportunity. I also considered Chatham Bars Inn. Originally, I planned to work with a family member who leads sales and marketing for Preferred Hotels, but when that plan shifted, she helped me find opportunities nearby.

How did USCB help you get this internship?

USCB encouraged me to pursue an internship. It’s required for my degree, and my advisor strongly recommended completing one this past summer. That push led me to Wequassett, and I’m very grateful.

Why do you think an internship is important?

Internships give you real-world experience that goes beyond a traditional job. They allow you to shadow departments, network with professionals, and gain insight into different career paths. I’ve done internships since high school, and they’ve been more valuable to me than any job in preparing for my future.

What's your most fun memory of your internship experience?

My favorite memory from my time at Wequassett was the Fourth of July celebration. For the past 16 years, Wequassett has hosted an extraordinary Independence Day event filled with music, incredible food, and spectacular fireworks. What stood out to me most was how deeply the team prioritized creating unforgettable guest experiences. This event is not the result of a single day’s work—it requires days of preparation, collaboration across every department, and clear, consistent communication. While the day itself is busy and demanding, it is also filled with energy, teamwork, and genuine smiles from both staff and guests. I learned that the key to delivering exceptional service and lasting memories lies in authenticity, and the Wequassett team exemplifies that spirit.
