Back for 2022 is the Film and Digital Media Symposium. Brought to you by the University
of South Carolina Beaufort and the Beaufort International Film Festival, this symposium
will bring together Scholars, Artists, Entrepreneurs and Technology Industrialists
for the purpose of sharing ideas concerning art, film, games and digital media with
the Low Country of South Carolina and beyond. Join us for one day of free and open-to-the-public
presentations held on the historic USCB Beaufort campus.

Center for the Arts (801 Carteret St Beaufort, SC 29902) in Classroom 101, Historic
- 10AM | Students from USCB will talk about their experience creating their short film The Ghostly Lovers of Fripp Island, and discuss the rewards, trials and tribulations of creating USCB’s first animated
short. by Jim Sidletsky, MFA, Media Arts, USCB Dept of Fine Arts.
- 11AM | Dr Brian Canada of USCB will talk about his latest developments with his game, Bugs ‘N Boo Hags. By Brian Canada, PhD, USCB
- 12PM | Jason Loia and Andrew Branning will talk about Dolfin Ventures and how they plan to
create a burgeoning game industry in the heart of the Low Country. By Jason Loia, Dolfin Ventures.
- 1PM | Ben Davis and JM Khayat, from Moondog Animation will speak about their latest release
Weird Waters soon to be released on a major platform. By Ben Davis and JM KHayat, Moondog Animation
More Information on the Beaufort International Film Festival: BIFF
Jim Sidletsky - 10:00am
Jim Sidletsky is teaches Media Arts at the University of South Carolina Beaufort. Jim
earned his Master of Fine Arts from the Savannah College of Arts and Design and his Bachelors of
Fine Arts from James Madison University. His own work specializes in the creation
of 3D Modeling and Texturing hard surface objects, characters and environments. Most
recently Jim has completed the direction of the short animated film; The Ghostly Lovers of Fripp Island, the first in a series of ghost stories based on Low Country tales and lore. Jim contributed
3D modeling and Visual Effects work to the television series Dead by Midnight 11PM Central, by You42 productions. He has prior experience as a contract artist for Electronic
Arts, creating the heads of athletes for the Madden football games as well as landscape
assets for the Tiger woods golf game. He also has experience in graphic design as
well as interactive design.
Brian Canada - 11:00am
Brian Canada, PhD, is an associate professor of computational science in the Department
of Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of South Carolina Beaufort,
where he also serves as that department's chair as well as chair of the USCB faculty
senate. Although trained as a computational biologist, Dr. Canada has always been
an artist at heart. His work in video game design has been featured at PAX South,
Indie Grits, the Savannah-based Geekend conference, the South Carolina Humanities
Festival, and the Beaufort International Film Festival's Film and Digital Humanities
Symposium. He is the award-winning creator of the forthcoming video game BUGS 'N BOO
HAGS, a fast-paced 1980s-style arcade game that takes place here in Beaufort and is
inspired by Lowcountry history, folklore, architecture, and scenery, complete with
pixelated likenesses of our current and former mayors, Stephen Murray and Billy Keyserling.
Jason Loia - 12:00pm
Jason Loia is a seasoned executive from the Silicon Valley with 20 years of game development
experience. He was one of the first pioneers in mobile gaming, having launched one
of the first mobile game studios in the U.S. and spending years working alongside
some of the legends of the mobile game industry including the founders of Electronic
Arts and Supercell. Jason now serves as Co-Founder and CEO of Dolfin Ventures, a startup
lab based in Beaufort, South Carolina. Jason holds an MSEE from Stanford and an MBA
from Harvard Business School, and proudly served active duty in the US Coast Guard.
