A Guide to Success
The Carolinian Creed was written in 1990 and it speaks to the respect, integrity and kindness valued throughout the University of South Carolina System. The Creed reminds us of the importance of civil discourse while embracing mutual respect for everyone, even those we disagree with. It's not an enforceable code of conduct, nor is it intended to limit freedom of expression. We encourage students to voluntarily subscribe to its tenets .
As a Sand Shark...
- I will practice personal and academic integrity.
- I will respect the dignity of all persons.
- I will respect the rights and property of others.
- I will discourage bigotry, while striving to learn from differences in people, ideas and opinions.
- I will demonstrate concern for others, their feelings, and their need for the conditions which support their work and development.
"Since becoming more active on campus, I’ve come to see the Sand Shark Carolinian Creed not just as a list of values, but as a guide to success. Integrity, respect, empathy, all have helped me grow into a better student, leader, and person. I’ve learned to appreciate the differences in people and experiences that have made me more open-minded and compassionate in everything I do."— Geovanna Cruz '26, Student Body President
“Being a student at USCB means being part of a community. Education isn’t just about earning credits and good grades. It is about being kind, humane, and open-minded.”— Mollie Barnes, Ph.D., Associate Professor of American Literature
